For today s design dilemma i m talking about how to design a living room where the front door opens into it. There are two kinds of homes. And then there s the problem that the rest of us face. Taking the doors off a hall closet and turning it into an open space for a chest and artwork or a mirror fools the eye into believing an entry exists.

There is a very small tile area for what could be a foyer maybe a 4x4 square and that is the only separation from the door to the dining room. In this situation landing strips tend to migrate into the whole room. My house in atlanta is the perfect example of this dilemma. I had thought of flip flopping the two rooms but my kitchen has a butlers.

You walk in the door and literally fall smack dab into the living room. My front entry is part of my dining room so i need the two spaces to complement each other. At the same time keeping a house in pristine guest condition 24 7 is unrealistic. I thought about flipping the two spaces however a dining room would then block the doors to the office.

The first one has an entryway a small hallway a nook near the front door or even a sharp turn that separates the front door from the rest of the home.
